1. Thinners: They're Not All the Same
“Give me a bottle of thinners.”
It's a request we hear regularly, but there's an important question that should follow:
What are you using it for?
Different coatings and applications can require very different solvents.
For example, Lacquer Thinners, 2K Thinners, Basecoat Thinners and General Purpose Thinners shouldn't automatically be treated as interchangeable products.
A quality lacquer thinner may be used where its particular solvent properties are required, while 2K and basecoat systems have their own application requirements.
General Purpose Thinners, on the other hand, can be a more economical option for appropriate general cleaning applications where a specialised thinner isn't necessary.

Don't choose a solvent by the word “thinners” on the container. Choose it according to what you're trying to accomplish.

2. Cleaning & Degreasing: Start With What You're Removing
The same principle applies to industrial cleaning.
Not every dirty surface needs the strongest chemical you can find.
Before choosing a degreaser or cleaner, consider three things:
What are you removing? What surface are you cleaning? How will the product be applied?
Heavy oil and grease on an engineering component may require a very different approach from cleaning a painted surface, workshop floor, bicycle or piece of machinery.

A flap disc is commonly used for material removal, blending and finishing.
They might all attach to an angle grinder, but that doesn't make them interchangeable.
Then there's the material itself.

Even once you've selected the appropriate type of abrasive, factors such as diameter, thickness and grit still matter.

4. Understanding Abrasive Grit
When sanding or finishing, one of the most common questions is:
What grit should I use?
As a general principle, lower grit numbers are coarser and more aggressive, while higher grit numbers provide a finer finish.
The correct choice depends on what you're trying to achieve.
Heavy material removal requires a different abrasive from preparing a surface for paint or creating a smooth final finish.
In many applications, the best result doesn't come from one abrasive at all.
It comes from progressing through appropriate grit stages.
Skipping too far between grits can make the next abrasive work harder than necessary and can affect the final finish.
Rather than simply asking for “sandpaper” or “a flap disc”, tell your supplier what material you're working with and the finish you're trying to achieve.
5. Silicone, Sealant or Adhesive?
Another common source of confusion is the enormous range of adhesives and sealants available today.
Products may look similar in a cartridge, but their intended applications can be completely different.
A silicone used around a bathroom or window isn't automatically suitable for a construction joint. An acrylic sealant may be ideal for one application and completely inappropriate for another. Polyurethane products bring another set of characteristics, while specialist adhesives are designed around particular substrates and bonding requirements.
Before choosing, consider:
What materials are you joining or sealing? Is it indoors or outdoors? Will the joint move? Will it be exposed to water or weather? Does it need to be painted? Are you bonding or sealing?
